Laia Sanz is proclaimed World Enduro Champion at the GP of France

22/10/2012
Laia Sanz is the new enduro world champion after finishing second in the final round of the series held in Brignoles France.
The Gas Gas rider had nothing easy in her persuit of the great Ludivine Puy who has added two victories on this weekend that ended the 2012 World Enduro Championship. Laia would be champion even if finishing fourth in the last race of this championship, but even this was at rick when she broke a radiator in a fall. But the mechanics of Gas Gas reacted in time and were able to replace the radiator before starting the second and decisive round. Puy won all the timed segments in front of this audience and Laia Sanz has devoted her time to secure the title for the entire season without taking too much risk. The two second places in France were enough to outdo Puy by 6 points in the overall standings and achieving the only offroad title that was missing from her résumé. Now Laia has accumulated 13 world titles: The first 12 were in Trial, and now Enduro, and earned two vistories at the Dakar Rally. Despite the injury she suffered in the last GP of Italy and that kept her away from the bikes for over a month, Laia has achieved this year's global trial championship, the World Enduro and Dakar earlier this year. These successes situate Laia Sanz as the Spanish rider with the most motorcycle titles from 12 +1, tying the records of Angel Nieto.

Iván Cervantes ended the championship with a creditable fifth place and yesterday he was fighting in the top for much of the day. The representative of Gas Gas Enduro 2 has achieved fourth place in the championship with one win and four podiums. The series champion has been Pierre-Alexandre Renet ahead of Spanish rider, Cristóbal Guerrero.

En Enduro 3, Sebastien Guillaume has reappeared after having to leave in the first leg due to a fall that penalized him quite some time. The French rider was sixth and finishes tenth despite not having participated in two of the eight championship races due to an injury. After Guillaume, Jordi Figueras followed in the overall standings. The Spaniard has enjoyed a very special weekend, this being his last appearance in a world championship after five years with Gas Gas.

The Portuguese rider Gonçalo Reis has been dismissed with a tenth place but today, riders Enduro 1 have not scored since as last night some bikes were stolen from the French participants parc ferme. In the junior category, bad luck for Danny McCanney first thing as he suffered a fall that caused a wound and bruise on his right forearm and he decided to leave as a precaution. The pilot from the Isle of Man, fighting for second place, finishes third in the world in this year of his debut, and already looks forward to next season in his pursuit to win the championship.

LAIA SANZ

"It's very special to win a championship and having a rival as strong as Lulu and having overcome the injury I had. I knew it was very important to win both races in Italy because there she was difficult to beat. This title completes a great year, I cannot ask for more! I do not look at the numbers, I try season to season to meet my goals but it took a lot of courage to be able to combine trial, enduro and raids and to win the three specialties in one year."

LUDIVINE PUY

"I've had a very good weekend but it was not enough to regain the championship. The bike was perfect and I've trained hard for and earned this. It has been a very hard year for us but I have always given the maximum. Laia is the right champion and congratulations. This is my last World Enduro because next year I want to be a mother. "

JORDI FIGUERAS

"Today I experienced many emotions throughout the day. I'm Very happy to close a cycle and now I begin another in which I have to learn a lot. I'm very satisfied. And the Gas Gas team has helped me a lot since I entered the world six years ago and I enjoyed the good times."
