"I feel good being able to defend my position as the winner"

03/06/2013
Interview | Sardinia Rally preview | Raids World Championship, Jordi Viladoms, Gas Gas rider
Jordi Viladoms will compete in the Rally of Sardinia, the third round of the World Rally Championship, and racing with the number 2 as he is the current runner-up in this World Championship specialty. In addition, the Gas Gas rider will be defending last year's victory in this Italian event.

- You won in Sardinia last year. What do you have to do to win this race again?

- I guess last year I had a perfect race: didn't make any mistakes and was very consistent, had a good pace and flawless navigation. This year, independently of whether we can win or not, we will try it again. You have to be very focused on navigation and press from the first moment to the very end.

- In a few years, and despite being an unusual Rally, Sardinia has become a classic of the World Raids Championship. Is this the best addition to the desert races?

- I think so. The Rally of Sardinia is a rally where navigation is very complicated. You have to be very focused, it is very difficult, and you have to be agile about reading the notes. The desert is hard for other aspects. Here it is more complicated for the navigation.

- How do you prepare for the Sardinia Rally?

- On the one hand, with the small Enduro motorcycle. And especially to mark the roadbook with the mileage points together with the notes. With time you are accustomed to this type of navigation. For me, I went to an Italian motorcycle rally and I think I am all set for Sardinia.

- Remember, you ran this race in the past with a Raid bike, now with an Enduro bike with a large tank and instruments. Was it difficult to adapt the Gas Gas EC 450 F to run the Sardinia Rally?

- No, no. It goes! It is an Enduro bike with which I have been able to ride well and I have become familiar with it very quickly. It has a good frame and a good engine and the team and myself have easily adapted to the bike, which helped us to prepare. I feel comfortable to be able to defend my position as the winner of last year's race.

- What other races do you plan to run this year to prepare for the Dakar?

- Well, we have not yet decided. I want to see how will we do in this race and then we will submit the program a little later. After Sardinia is the Baja Aragón, another race I like to run, as well as a year-end rally: Pharaohs, Morocco or Merzuouga to get a shot at Dakar.
